Material recycling

Citizens' councils

Polyvert Recyclage works with several drop-off points where you can take your expanded polystyrene (#6) recyclables directly.

For the deposit procedure and the condition of the material, please refer to the eco-centers’ regulations.

Recycling expanded polystyrene (or “Styrofoam”) is still little known to the general public, despite its widespread use in food packaging, electronics packaging and various everyday products. The purpose of this guide is to explain why this type of plastic is generally not accepted in the blue bin, and to provide information on best practices for disposing of it at specialized drop-off points or ecocentres.

This list of resources is not exhaustive, and we are not affiliated with any of these drop-off points. We strongly recommend that you check the regulations directly with the ecocenters before going there.

List of polystyrene collection points

We’ve created a guide listing most of the ecocentres that accept polystyrene for public collection.

Best practices for bringing it to ecocentres
  • Clean polystyrene: Be sure to rinse and dry food trays thoroughly to limit the risk of contamination or odor.

  • Avoid breaking it: Keep polystyrene pieces whole whenever possible, for easier handling.

  • Group your items together: Place all your polystyrene pieces in a dedicated bag or container to prevent them from scattering.

  • Find out in advance: Contact the ecocenter or consult their website to find out when they accept polystyrene and under what conditions.

To learn more about our expanded plastics recycling process, please visit the “Product recycling and plant rejects” page.

The information presented here does not cover all depots and does not constitute a guarantee of their acceptance of polystyrene. We are not affiliated with any of these facilities. It is your responsibility to check the conditions of deposit directly with the ecocenter concerned.
